In battery electrode fabrication and advanced membrane manufacturing, a Gap-Control Cold Rolling Press (also known as a fixed-gap calender) is a high-precision instrument designed to control the physical thickness of a processed sheet.

A gap-control system establishes a completely rigid mechanical boundary condition. (1) The Displacement Lock: The distance between the rollers is adjusted via micro-threaded screws or fine wedges, typically featuring a resolution down to ±1um (or 0.001 mm). Once set, the vertical position of the roll bearings is mechanically locked. (2) Variable Reaction Forces: As a dried electrode sheet or composite polymer membrane (like a Zirfon-type diaphragm or a dry-film PTFE matrix) passes through the nip, the machine applies whatever force is necessary to crush the material down to that precise gap width. If the incoming sheet has local thick spots or a high areal density, the local separating force spike can be massive.

When evaluating a benchtop or pilot-scale gap-control cold press, look for these key structural features: (1) Roller Hardness (≥ 60-65 HRC): The rollers must be machined from hardened tool steel (often chrome-plated or tungsten carbide coated). If the rollers are too soft, hard active ceramic particles can pit the mirror finish (Ra < 0.2um), leaving permanent defects on subsequent runs. (2) Dial/Digital Micrometer Precision: High-end laboratory units feature independent dual digital micrometers. This allows researchers to deliberately introduce a micro-taper or perfectly balance the alignment to eliminate asymmetric "bannaning" or wrinkling of the metal current collector foil. (3) Glovebox Adaptability: For processing moisture-sensitive materials—like solid-state sulfide electrolytes or sodium-ion battery polyanionic cathodes—ensure the motor housing, electrical lines, and adjustment knobs are compatible with a sealed Argon-filled glovebox environment.

Note
  • Each time the reduced thickness is 20%-25%. Multiple-rounds calendering is needed for higher coating thickness reduction. For example, the initial electrode thickness is 200 um, then 180 um, 160 um, 140 um and so on under a certain pressure.
