For high-throughput pouch cell production, a pneumatic pouch cell cutter (also known as a pneumatic die cutting machine) is used to precisely cut the rectangular shapes from coated electrode sheets. Unlike coin cell cutters, which use simple circular dies, pouch cell cutters must handle larger areas and provide specific tabs for current collection.
The key features of pneumatic pouch cell cutter are: (1) Precision Die Sets: These machines use specialized "male-female" die sets made of hardened tungsten steel or Cr12MoV. This ensures the edges are burr-free (<15 um), which is critical to prevent internal short circuits in stacked or folded pouch cells. (2) Pneumatic Actuation: By using compressed air (typically 0.5–0.8 MPa), the cutter provides a consistent, high-velocity vertical force that is far superior to manual lever-arm cutters for repeatability. (3) Safety Interlocks: Most professional units feature a light curtain or a dual-button start system to ensure the operator's hands are clear of the cutting zone. (4) Glovebox Compatibility: Many models are designed with a compact footprint to be placed inside an argon-filled glovebox for cutting moisture-sensitive anodes or specialized solid-state electrolytes.
