High-purity iodine (I2) powder serves as the core active cathode material for aqueous zinc-iodine (Zn-I2) batteries. Operating on a fast, reversible two-electron redox conversion between iodide ions and elemental iodine, it delivers a high theoretical specific capacity (~ 211 mAh/g based on iodine) at a stable potential platform of ~1.2–1.3 V.

The key considerations for I2 cathode implementation are: (1) Electronic Conductivity Enhancement: Elemental iodine is intrinsically an electrical insulator. To unlock high rate capabilities, high-purity I2 powder must be thoroughly blended and ball-milled with conductive carbon hosts (such as Super P, multi-walled carbon nanotubes, graphene, or porous carbon frameworks) that provide a continuous electronic pathway. (2) Confined Architecture & Mitigation of Sublimation/Dissolution: I2 has a notable vapor pressure and can sublime easily if stored improperly. More critically, intermediate polyiodide species (I3^-, I5^-) generated during discharge are highly soluble in aqueous electrolytes, leading to the shuttle effect (where active material migrates to the zinc anode, causing self-discharge). High-performance cathodes often utilize porous carbon matrices with physical or chemical confinement (such as oxygen/nitrogen-functionalized carbon or metal-organic frameworks) to trap the iodine species locally. (3) Purity Requirements: sing high-purity grades (>99.9%) ensures the absence of reactive halide or metallic trace contaminants that could trigger parasitic side reactions, accelerate self-discharge, or induce localized corrosion in the aqueous zinc sulfate/halide electrolyte environment.
