Zinc trifluoroacetate (Zn(CF3COO)2, commonly abbreviated as Zn(TFA)2 or Zn(AceF}3) powder is a specialized, fluorinated organic acid salt utilized in advanced research for aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs).Positioned between traditional aliphatic carboxylates and bulky sulfonates, zinc trifluoroacetate combines a short-chain fluorinated carboxylate structure with high aqueous solubility, offering distinct interfacial and solvation-tuning properties.

The key electrochemical advantages of zinc trifluoroacetate are: (1) Anion-Derived Interphase Engineering (SEI Formation): The trifluoroacetate anion (CF3COO-) can undergo electrochemical reduction and cleavage at the zinc anode interface during initial cycling. This promotes the in-situ formation of a robust, inorganic-rich Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) containing zinc fluoride (ZnF2) and carbon/oxygen-based species. (2) Suppression of Dendrites and Side Reactions: The resulting hybrid passivating layer lowers interfacial impedance while smoothing out local electric field gradients, effectively suppressing parasitic hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) and preventing 3D zinc dendrite proliferation. (3) Solvation Sheath Restructuring: The highly electronegative trifluoromethyl (CF3-) group withdraws electron density from the carboxylate head group, weakening its coordination with water and altering the primary solvation sheath of Zn^{2+}. This reduces free water activity near the electrode surface. (4) Prevention of Basic Salt Precipitation: Similar to triflate and perchlorate systems, trifluoroacetate-based electrolytes exhibit a high resistance to the formation of insulating basic zinc precipitates (such as basic zinc sulfates) during localized pH swings.
