Add-Ons
High-purity zinc telluride (ZnTe) powder is a specialized semiconducting and intercalation/conversion cathode material for advanced aqueous zinc-ion and zinc-tellurium hybrid batteries. Instead of starting with elemental tellurium (Te) or suffering from the high initial dissolution and polyselenide/polytelluride shuttling associated with pure chalcogen cathodes, utilizing pre-formed ZnTe bypasses several aggressive degradation pathways while providing a stable host matrix for reversible electrochemical cycling.
The key electrochemical advantages of the ZnTe powder for aqueous Zn-Te battery are: (1) Pre-Loaded Zinc Source & Conversion/De-alloying: By introducing tellurium already bound in a zinc matrix (ZnTe), the system starts in a chemically balanced state. During charging, ZnTe undergoes a controlled extraction of zinc ions (Zn^{2+}), converting into elemental tellurium or intermediate zinc-deficient phases. During discharge, zinc ions reversibly re-intercalate or alloy back into the tellurium matrix to reform ZnTe. (2) Suppression of Initial Capacity Loss and Dissolution: Elemental chalcogens (S, Se, Te) often suffer from severe irreversible capacity loss and aggressive intermediate dissolution during the very first cycle. Pre-synthesized ZnTe stabilizes the initial structural framework, mitigating the uncontrolled dissolution of active mass into the aqueous electrolyte. (3) Favorable Electronic Conductivity: As a II-VI direct bandgap semiconductor with intrinsic electronic conductivity superior to sulfur and selenium systems, ZnTe maintains efficient charge-transfer kinetics, enabling strong rate performance and low internal polarization without requiring massive amounts of conductive carbon additives.
