The aluminum foil is the industry-standard current collector for the cathode due to its unique electrochemical stability at high voltages. When aluminum is exposed to the electrolyte, it naturally forms a thin, dense film of aluminum oxide (Al2O3) and aluminum fluoride (AlF3). This film acts as an electrical insulator that prevents the metal from further corrosion while allowing electrons to "tunnel" through if the layer is thin enough.
The double-side matte aluminum foils are normally used for double-side electrode coating for pouch and cylindrical cell due to its high adhesion with coating material.
