FSE (1,2-Bis(difluoromethylsilyl)ethane or 1,2-Bis(methyldifluorosilyl)ethane, C4H10F4Si2) is an advanced, highly specialized organosilane compound evaluated as a trace-level film-forming electrolyte additive (typically around 0.5 wt%) for high-energy lithium-ion batteries—particularly those employing high-voltage or high-nickel formulations.

The key functional roles of FSE as battery electrolyte additive are shown below: (1) In-Situ Ultra-Thin SEI / CEI Formation: FSE is designed to undergo preferential electrochemical reduction and oxidation ahead of bulk organic carbonate solvents. It decomposes to construct a remarkably thin, highly stable passivating interphase on both electrode surfaces. This protective layer effectively blocks continuous electrolyte decomposition while maintaining fast Li+ desolvation and transport kinetics. (2) Silicon-Fluorine Synergistic Passivation: The dual difluoromethylsilyl centers (Si-CHF2) break down to incorporate both inorganic silicon-oxygen/silicate species and fluorine-rich components (such as LiF) into the interfacial film. This hybrid inorganic-organic architecture provides mechanical flexibility combined with high interfacial stability, suppressing impedance buildup during extended cycling. (3) High-Voltage and Elevated-Temperature Suppression: Particularly useful in high-potential environments (e.g., cells operating at ~ 4.3 V or under high-temperature stress like 60°C, FSE mitigates transition metal dissolution and prevents structural cracking or gas evolution at the electrode interfaces.
