PFP (Pentafluoropyridine, C5F5N) is a highly electron-deficient, perfluorinated heteroaromatic compound evaluated as a specialized functional electrolyte additive for advanced lithium-ion and lithium-metal batteries. Featuring a pyridine ring completely substituted with fluorine atoms, PFP leverages strong electron-withdrawing inductive effects and specific ring-nitrogen coordination to stabilize electrode interfaces.
The key functional roles of PFP as battery electrolyte additive are shown below: (1) Preferential Reduction & Anode SEI Engineering: Because of the strongly electronegative fluorine atoms and the electron-deficient aromatic ring, PFP possesses a high reduction potential relative to standard carbonate solvents. It undergoes preferential electrochemical reduction during initial charging cycles, breaking down to help construct a dense, inorganic-rich Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) containing lithium fluoride (LiF) and nitrogen-containing passivating species on graphite, silicon, or lithium-metal anodes. (2) Lewis Base Coordination & Anion Modulation: The ring nitrogen atom possesses a lone pair of electrons capable of mild coordination with Lewis acidic species (such as coordination centers or decomposition fragments from LiPF6), assisting in local solvation shell structuring and ionic dissociation. (3) High-Voltage Cathode Compatibility (CEI Formation): The fluorinated aromatic framework also participates in oxidative passivation on high-potential cathode surfaces, contributing to a stable Cathode Electrolyte Interphase (CEI) that minimizes transition metal dissolution and electrolyte oxidation at voltages ~ 4.3 V.
