Add-Ons
Methyl hexafluoroisopropyl carbonate (commonly designated as MHFPC or methyl 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propyl carbonate) is an asymmetric fluorinated organic carbonate engineered for advanced energy storage systems. By pairing a compact, electron-donating methyl group with a bulky, strongly electron-withdrawing hexafluoroisopropyl moiety, MHFPC serves as an advanced co-solvent and functional interphase-directing additive for high-voltage and high-safety lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries.
Its main functional roles in electrolyte engineering are: (1) Interphase Engineering (SEI/CEI): Because of its lower reduction potential relative to standard alkyl carbonates, MHFPC undergoes preferential reductive decomposition during initial electrochemical formation. This pathway promotes the precipitation of a stable, inorganic-rich Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) containing metal fluorides (LiF / NaF) that suppress continuous electrolyte consumption. (2) Oxidative Stability for High-Voltage Cathodes: The strong electron-withdrawing effect of the hexafluoroisopropyl chain deactivates the central carbonyl group against electrophilic attack and premature oxidation, raising the anodic stability ceiling for cells operating above 4.3 V–4.5 V. (3) Flammability Mitigation: The dense local fluorine concentration assists in suppressing burning behavior, elevating the thermal abuse threshold of the bulk liquid electrolyte formulation.
Its main electrochemical applications are: (1) High-Voltage Lithium-Ion Batteries: Deployed in formulations paired with high-nickel layered oxide cathodes (e.g., NMC811) to minimize transition-metal dissolution and mitigate gas evolution during high-temperature cycling. (2) Silicon and Advanced Anode Integration: Assists in building resilient, elastic interphases capable of tolerating the severe volumetric shifts characteristic of silicon composite or alloy anodes.
