Add-Ons
1,2-Diethoxyethane (commonly designated as DEE or ethyl glyme) is a symmetric linear dialkyl ether engineered as an advanced high-performance electrolyte solvent, co-solvent, and solvation-sheath modifier for next-generation lithium-metal and sodium-metal batteries. By substituting the smaller methoxy groups of traditional 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME) with bulkier ethoxy groups, DEE utilizes steric hindrance to fundamentally alter cation coordination chemistry without requiring complex fluorinated structures.
The functional roles of DEE in electrolyte engineering are: (1) Steric-Effect Solvation Tuning: DEE’s bulky ethoxy architecture discourages solvent-dominated coordination sheaths. Even at moderate or standard salt concentrations (e.g., 1 M to 4 M LiFSI), it induces an anion-rich inner solvation shell, bypassing the high-concentration requirements typically needed to drive contact ion pair formation. (2) Robust Anion-Derived Interphase (SEI/CEI) Formation: Because the primary coordination sphere is rich in anions (FSI-), DEE-based electrolytes promote the preferential decomposition of counter-anions during early-stage cycling. This yields a dense, inorganic-rich Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) heavily enriched with lithium or sodium fluoride (LiF / NaF) that suppresses dendrite proliferation. (3) Enhanced High-Voltage Oxidative Stability: The altered solvation structure and elevated LUMO/HOMO stability thresholds prevent premature electrolyte breakdown, allowing stable operation above 4.3 V–4.4 V against high-nickel layered oxide cathodes without relying on expensive fluorinated co-solvents. (4) Improved Thermal Safety Margin: Offering a substantially wider thermal window than standard DME (which features a hazardous flash point of -2 °C), DEE's higher boiling point (~121 °C) and safer flash point (~35 °C) heavily reduce volatility and flammability hazards during storage and cell assembly.
