Add-Ons
Screen-Printed Indium Tin Oxide Electrodes (ITO-SPEs) combine the high electrical conductivity, wide electrochemical potential window, and optical transparency of degenerate semiconductor {In2O3:Sn} with the disposable planar form factor of thick-film printed chips. Unlike opaque carbon or metallic gold electrodes, ITO-SPEs allow light transmission through the working area, making them the primary bridge between electrochemical detection and optical interrogation (spectroelectrochemistry, electrochemiluminescence, and photoelectrochemical biosensing).
Commercial and laboratory-fabricated ITO-SPEs typically implement one of two structural formats: Working Electrode (WE): Optically transparent 80–85% transmittance in the visible spectrum, 400–800 nm), with sheet resistance typically R_s ~ 10–30 Ω/sq (sputtered) or 50–100 Ω/sq (nanoparticle sintered inks). Counter Electrode (CE): Screen-printed carbon or platinum paste surrounding the working disc. Reference Electrode (RE): Screen-printed Ag/AgCl pseudoreference track. Dielectric Layer: Hydrophobic insulating mask creating a well (20–60 uL) directly over the transparent ITO aperture.
Primary Transduction Modalities: (1) Electrochemiluminescence (ECL):The transparent substrate allows a photodetector (photomultiplier tube, silicon photodiode, or smartphone CMOS) to be positioned directly behind or beneath the electrode working area, collecting emission (e.g., from Ru(bpy)3]^{2+} or luminol) without light obstruction from opaque solution layers. (2) Photoelectrochemical (PEC) Biosensing: The electrode acts as an optically clear current collector for drop-cast or sensitized semiconductor quantum dots (CdS, TiO2, BiVO4). Light illuminates the photoactive interface through the backside of the electrode, decoupling photon delivery from fluidic delivery. (3) Spectroelectrochemistry (In Situ UV-Vis / EC-Raman): Real-time monitoring of optical absorbance shifts during redox cycles (e.g., tracking the electrochromic coloration/bleaching of conductive polymers like PEDOT or Prussian Blue directly on-chip). (4) Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) / Electrochemical Waveguides: ITO can serve as a dual-function lossy mode resonance (LMR) or transparent electrode layer in integrated optoelectronic biosensing chips.
