DMAA (N,N-Dimethylacrylamide) is a highly polar, reactive monofunctional vinyl monomer featuring a tertiary amide group attached to an activated acrylic backbone. While multifunctional crosslinkers establish 3D network connectivity, DMAA is utilized in advanced energy storage research as a premier functional co-monomer and reactive solvent for Gel Polymer Electrolytes (GPEs)—particularly in aqueous, polar aprotic, and high-voltage lithium/sodium metal battery systems—offering rapid polymerization kinetics and exceptional alkali metal ion coordination.

Its main features are: (1) Tertiary Amide Polar Core: Contains strongly electron-donating carbonyl (C=O) and tertiary amine (-N(CH3)2) groups within its amide moiety. This creates a high dipole moment that promotes strong chemical interactions with polar solvents, salt ions, and electrode surfaces. (2) Rapid Free-Radical Polymerization Kinetics: As an acrylamide derivative, DMAA exhibits significantly faster propagation rates during free-radical polymerization compared to standard acrylate or methacrylate monomers, enabling rapid gelation under mild thermal or UV activation. (3) Broad Solvent Compatibility: Exhibits exceptional miscibility in water, polar organic solvents, and aprotic carbonate binary/ternary blends (EC/DEC/DMC/PC), preventing phase separation during polymer network formation. (4) Strong Ion Solvation Capability: The oxygen and nitrogen atoms act as effective Lewis base sites that actively coordinate with lithium (Li+), sodium (Na+), or zinc (Zn^{2+}) ions, reducing effective desolvation energy and facilitating smooth ionic transport.

Its main functional roles in GPEs synthesis are: (1) Enhanced Ionic Conductivity via Ion-Dipole Coordination: The lone pairs on the amide oxygen and nitrogen atoms interact dynamically with charge-carrying cations, assisting in salt dissociation and promoting segmental chain motion. This ensures that DMAA-modified GPE networks maintain high room-temperature ionic conductivities routinely exceeding 10^{-3}  S/cm. (2) Interfacial Wetting & Adhesion: Due to its high surface polarity, DMAA thoroughly wets separator membranes (such as glass fiber, PE/PP, or Celgard) and high-loading composite electrode microstructures (such as NCM811 or silicon anodes), eliminating interfacial voids and lowering charge-transfer resistance. (3) Robust Co-Polymerization Network Modification: When copolymerized alongside multi-functional structural crosslinkers (such as HDDA, HDDMA, TPGDA, or MBAA [N,N'-Methylenebisacrylamide] in aqueous systems), DMAA introduces polar pendant groups that prevent crystalline phase separation, yielding stable, amorphous 3D gel matrices.
