Isobornyl acrylate (IBOA) (C13H20O2) is a rigid, bulky monofunctional acrylic monomer featuring a bicyclic isobornyl ester group attached to a reactive acrylate moiety. While multi-functional monomers provide primary network crosslinking, IBOA is widely utilized in advanced energy storage research as a specialized structural co-monomer and reactive diluent for Gel Polymer Electrolytes (GPEs). It imparts exceptional mechanical rigidity, high glass transition temperature (Tg), and enhanced thermal stability to polymer networks in high-energy lithium and sodium metal batteries.

Its main features are: (1) Bulky Bicyclic Architecture: Features a sterically hindered, rigid isobornyl ring structure that restricts polymer chain segment rotation, significantly raising the thermal decomposition threshold and mechanical modulus of the resulting matrix. (2) High Glass Transition Temperature (Tg): Homopolymers of IBOA possess a high Tg (~ 94℃), allowing researchers to precisely tailor and elevate the thermal and dimensional stability of soft gel electrolytes. (3) Low Liquid Viscosity & Reactive Dilution: Exhibits low room-temperature viscosity, enabling it to function as an efficient reactive diluent that dissolves readily in aprotic carbonate electrolytes and lowers precursor viscosity for thorough separator and electrode infiltration. (4) Hydrophobic & Chemically Stable Character: The bulky hydrocarbon ring provides strong hydrophobic properties and excellent chemical resistance against aggressive electrolyte salts (LiPF6, LiTFSI) and reactive metal anode surfaces.

Its main functional roles in GPEs synthesis are: (1) Mechanical Reinforcement & Dendrite Suppression:

Because pure flexible networks (such as those formed solely by PEGDA or PEGMA) can sometimes lack sufficient shear modulus to mechanically suppress lithium or sodium dendrite penetration, incorporating IBOA as a rigid co-monomer substantially increases the tensile strength and Young's modulus of the GPE. (2) Copolymerization Network Tuning: Copolymerized alongside flexible crosslinkers (such as HDDA, HDDMA, or TPGDA) and ion-conducting oligomers (like PEGMA), IBOA prevents excessive chain mobility and swelling, maintaining dimensional stability during prolonged cycling and elevated-temperature operation. (3) Suppression of Volatility & Flammability: The high boiling point and strong solvation interactions of the rigid isobornyl group help anchor liquid carbonate plasticizers within the polymer mesh, reducing volatility and improving overall cell safety under thermal abuse conditions.
