PHEA (2-Phenoxyethyl acrylate) (C11H14O3) is a specialized, high-refractive-index monofunctional acrylate monomer featuring an aromatic phenoxy group attached via a flexible ethylene glycol ether spacer to a reactive acrylate moiety. While multi-functional crosslinkers establish 3D network connectivity, PHEA is utilized in advanced energy storage research as a functional co-monomer and reactive diluent for Gel Polymer Electrolytes (GPEs) and solid-state polymer electrolyte systems. It imparts enhanced thermal stability, robust mechanical rigidity, and optimized interfacial passivation for high-energy lithium and sodium metal batteries.

Its main structural features are: (1) Aromatic Phenoxy Architecture: Features a rigid benzene ring linked via an aliphatic ether bond to the acrylic backbone. The aromatic moiety raises the thermal decomposition threshold and introduces electron characteristics that interact favorably with electrode surfaces. (2) Low Liquid Viscosity & Reactive Dilution: Possesses favorable room-temperature liquid viscosity, functioning as an efficient reactive diluent that dissolves readily in aprotic carbonate binary/ternary solvent blends (EC/DEC/DMC/PC) and thoroughly wets porous separator membranes (glass fiber, PE/PP) and dense electrode microstructures prior to curing. (3) Rapid Acrylate Polymerization Kinetics: As an acrylate derivative, PHEA exhibits fast free-radical propagation rates under thermal or UV activation, ensuring efficient copolymerization into the growing 3D polymer network. (4) Chemical Stability & Solvation Compatibility: The aromatic side chain exhibits high chemical resistance against aggressive aprotic electrolyte salts (LiPF6, LiTFSI, LiFSI) while preventing phase separation during in situ gelation.

The main functional roles in GPEs are: (1) Enhanced Interfacial Passivation & SEI/CEI Formation: The electrochemical reduction of the aromatic phenoxy ring during initial formation cycles contributes to the in situ construction of a robust, inorganic-organic hybrid Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) on alkali metal anodes and a stable Cathode Electrolyte Interphase (CEI) on high-voltage cathodes, suppressing parasitic electrolyte decomposition. (2) Mechanical Modulus & Thermal Resilience: Because soft, flexible linear polymer matrices can sometimes lack sufficient rigidity, incorporating PHEA as a functional co-monomer introduces rigid aromatic pendant groups that elevate the tensile strength, shear modulus, and thermal stability of the GPE matrix. (3) Superior Interfacial Wetting & Adhesion: Due to its polar ether linkage and aromatic character, PHEA radically improves the wetting behavior of liquid electrolyte precursors on high-loading composite cathodes (such as NCM811) and lithium/sodium metal foils, minimizing interfacial resistance and eliminating dry-out.
