Trimethylolpropane triacrylate (TMPTA) is a trifunctional acrylic monomer (C15H20O6) featuring three reactive acrylate (CH2=CHCOO-) groups radiating from a central trimethylolpropane core. In advanced energy storage research, TMPTA is widely utilized as a high-reactivity crosslinking agent for Gel Polymer Electrolytes (GPEs) and in situ solidified battery systems, delivering rapid curing kinetics, high crosslink density, and robust mechanical reinforcement for high-energy lithium and sodium metal batteries.

The main functional roles of TMPTA monomer in GPEs are: (1) Rapid 3D Network Formation & Liquid Immobilization: Upon thermal or UV-initiated radical polymerization (using initiators like AIBN, BPO, or photoinitiators), TMPTA rapidly crosslinks into a dense polymer mesh that permanently traps and immobilizes organic liquid electrolytes. This transforms free-flowing liquid cells into safe, dimensionally stable gel systems without sacrificing ionic conductivity. (2) Suppression of Dendrite Penetration: The high crosslink density and elastic rigidity imparted by TMPTA's trifunctional nodes create a mechanically robust barrier that resists sharp lithium dendrite propagation during fast-charging cycles, significantly reducing internal short-circuit risks in lithium metal batteries. (3) Enhanced Interfacial Contact via In Situ Curing: Used in in situ cell assembly, the low-viscosity precursor thoroughly wets porous electrode surfaces and separator pores. Upon curing, it eliminates interfacial resistance gaps and maintains intimate contact during electrode volume fluctuations.
