Diethyl vinylphosphonate (DEVP) is a specialized organophosphorus monomer (C6H13O3P) featuring a polymerizable vinyl (CH2=CH-) group directly bonded to a dialkyl phosphonate (-P(=O)(OC2H5)2) moiety. In advanced energy storage research, DEVP is utilized as a dual-function, reactive flame-retardant co-monomer for Gel Polymer Electrolytes (GPEs). By copolymerizing directly into the 3D polymer network, it permanently anchors phosphorus into the gel matrix, drastically suppressing electrolyte flammability while contributing to stable interfacial passivation in high-safety lithium and sodium metal batteries.

The main functional roles of DEVP monomer in GPEs are: (1) Active Suppression of Electrolyte Flammability: By immobilizing high concentrations of phosphorus directly within the gel polymer network, DEVP effectively raises the flash point of the liquid electrolyte plasticizer and terminates radical chain reactions during thermal runaway, preventing sustained ignition. (2) Interfacial Passivation (SEI/CEI Enhancement): The phosphonate functionality participates in electrochemical reduction and oxidation processes during initial formation cycles, contributing to the formation of a robust, inorganic-rich Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) on anodes and Cathode Electrolyte Interphase (CEI) on high-voltage cathodes. (3) Copolymerization with Crosslinking Networks: Because DEVP possesses a reactive vinyl group, it readily copolymerizes alongside multi-functional crosslinkers (such as PEGDA, TMPTA, or TMPTMA) or via thiol-ene click chemistry, ensuring that the flame-retardant segments are uniformly distributed throughout the 3D gel mesh rather than acting as inert fillers.
