Dilithium malonate (Li2C3H2O4 or CH2(COOLi)2) is an organic sacrificial cathode pre-lithiation additive designed to offset initial irreversible capacity loss (ICL) in high-capacity anode systems (such as silicon-carbon and hard carbon). Belonging to the carboxylate family alongside lithium oxalate (Li2C2O4) and dilithium squarate (Li2C4O4), it undergoes oxidative decarboxylation during the first formation charge to inject extra Li+ ions into the cell without leaving inactive transition-metal dead weight.
