Li2DHBA (3,4-Dihydroxybenzoic acid dilithium salt, or dilithium protocatechuate), is a dual-functional, sacrificial organic cathode pre-lithiation additive. Like its benzonitrile analog (Li2DHBN), it features an ortho-hydroquinone core to provide extra lithium inventory during initial cell formation, but incorporates a carboxylate functionality that modulates delithiation kinetics and byproduct chemistry.
During the initial formation charge, Li2DHBA undergoes an irreversible two-electron/two-lithium oxidative dehydrogenation/delithiation at the phenolic oxygens:
