Li2DHBA (3,4-Dihydroxybenzoic acid dilithium salt, or dilithium protocatechuate), is a dual-functional, sacrificial organic cathode pre-lithiation additive. Like its benzonitrile analog (Li2DHBN), it features an ortho-hydroquinone core to provide extra lithium inventory during initial cell formation, but incorporates a carboxylate functionality that modulates delithiation kinetics and byproduct chemistry.

During the initial formation charge, Li2DHBA undergoes an irreversible two-electron/two-lithium oxidative dehydrogenation/delithiation at the phenolic oxygens:

The extracted Li+ ions enter the electrolyte and migrate to the negative electrode to consume irreversible capacity (SEI formation, irreversible traps in SiOx or hard carbon). This prevents the active cathode (e.g., LFP or NCM) from being permanently stripped of cyclable lithium.

The key advantages of Li2DHBA as pre-lithiation additive are: (1) Voltage Compatibility: Full delithiation occurs prior to standard cathode extraction peaks, finishing below 3.4 V vs. Li/Li+. This allows complete anode pre-doping before the main cathode lattice (especially LiFePO4 at 3.45 V) experiences high-voltage stress. (2) Carboxylate Anchoring: The free -COOH functionality promotes intermolecular hydrogen bonding and chemical coordination with the surfaces of oxide cathode particles and polymeric binders (e.g., modified polyacrylic acid or carboxymethyl cellulose). This reduces the migration of de-lithiated quinone units into the electrolyte. (3) Elimination of Severe Gassing: Unlike classical inorganic or carboxylate donors (Li2O, Li2C2O4) that generate large volumes of CO2 gas requiring secondary pouch venting and resealing, Li2DHBA retains its aromatic carbon backbone as a condensed organic species.
