Li₂DHBN (3,4-dihydroxybenzonitrile dilithium salt) is an organic sacrificial cathode pre-lithiation additive designed to compensate for the initial irreversible capacity loss (ICL) in high-capacity anode systems, such as silicon-graphite (Si/C) and hard carbon.
During the initial formation charge of the battery, Li2DHBN undergoes an irreversible two-electron oxidative delithiation, converting into an ortho-quinone derivative (DOBN) while releasing extra Li+ ions into the electrolyte:
