Add-Ons
Cationic Photoinitiator 6976 (widely known commercially as UVI-6976) is a high-performance cationic photoinitiator consisting of a mixture of triarylsulfonium hexafluoroantimonate salts typically dissolved in propylene carbonate (~50% active solids). In advanced energy storage and materials research, Photoinitiator 6976 is utilized for the rapid UV-induced cationic ring-opening polymerization (CROP) of epoxy resins, cyclic ethers, and vinyl ether crosslinking precursors (such as PEGE, PEGDE, and GMA) for Gel Polymer Electrolytes (GPEs) and solid-state polymer electrolyte systems.
Its main features are: (1) Triarylsulfonium Hexafluoroantimonate Structure: Features mixed triarylsulfonium cations paired with weakly coordinating hexafluoroantimonate (SbF6^-) counterions. Upon UV irradiation, photolysis generates strong Brønsted/Lewis superacids that drive rapid cationic ring-opening reactions. (2) Liquid Formulation: Supplied as a clear, low-viscosity amber liquid (formulated in propylene carbonate), allowing effortless, homogeneous mixing into liquid electrolyte precursor solutions without the dissolution hurdles associated with solid crystalline salts. (3) High Photolytic Reactivity & Quantum Yield: Exhibits exceptionally high photosensitivity and rapid acid-generation rates under UV exposure, enabling fast gelation kinetics even at low concentrations. (4) Dark Curing Capability: Because cationic polymerization is driven by active acid catalysts rather than transient free radicals, the polymerization reaction can continue ("dark cure") after the UV light source is turned off, ensuring complete monomer conversion throughout thick or shadowed separator pores.
