ITX (2-Isopropylthioxanthone) (C16H14OS) is a high-efficiency Norrish Type II photoinitiator and photosensitizer of the thioxanthone family. In advanced battery research, ITX is utilized to sensitize Gel Polymer Electrolytes (GPEs) and solid-state polymer electrolytes, enabling deep-section UV-curing and efficient photon absorption when paired with hydrogen donors or amine synergists.

Its main features are: (1) Type II Photochemical Mechanism: Unlike Type I initiators that undergo unimolecular cleavage, ITX absorbs near-UV light to enter an excited triplet state, subsequently abstracting a hydrogen atom from a co-initiator (such as an amine synergist) to generate active initiating free radicals via a bimolecular pathway. (2) Extended UV-A Absorption Maxima: Features strong absorption bands spanning the near-UV and violet spectrum (with maxima at approximately 259 nm and 383 nm), making it highly responsive to modern UV-A LED curing sources. (3) Photosensitization Capability: Acts as an optical antenna that transfers energy or abstracts hydrogens to boost the reactivity of sluggish co-initiators or extend curing depth through pigmented or highly scattering separator matrices. (4) Solubility: Supplied as a light-yellow crystalline powder with excellent solubility in aprotic carbonate solvents (EC/DEC/DMC/PC) and liquid monomer blends.

Its main functional roles in GPEs synthesis are: (1) Deep-Section Curing of Thick Separators & Electrodes: Because ITX absorbs strongly at longer, highly penetrating wavelengths (~ 383 nm), it successfully drives radical generation deep within thick, porous separator membranes (such as glass fiber or high-loading composite electrodes) where short-wavelength UV light is filtered out. (2) Synergistic Bimolecular Initiation: Formulated alongside a tertiary amine co-initiator, ITX provides precise control over gelation kinetics, preventing premature surface-skinning and ensuring uniform 3D network polymerization throughout the entire electrolyte volume. (3) Enhanced Monomer Conversion: The photosensitizing action accelerates radical propagation rates, achieving high conversion yields of structural crosslinkers (such as TPGDA, HDDA, or HDDMA) to permanently immobilize liquid electrolytes and eliminate leakage risks.
