To deposit thin-film solid-state electrolyte precursors, catalyst inks for fuel cells, or trial electrode slurries—manual hand-held spray guns are often used for rapid prototyping before transitioning to automated slot-die, spin-coating, or automated ultrasonic spray systems.
(1) The Tool of Choice: High-precision, dual-action airbrushes or miniature Low-Volume Low-Pressure (LVLP) spray guns equipped with stainless steel needles and fluid nozzles (0.2 mm to 0.5 mm orifices). (2) Ink Formulation Dynamics: The slurry or precursor solution must have low viscosity and be completely free of agglomerates to prevent instant nozzle clogging. High shear mixing or probe ultrasonication of the fluid immediately before filling the gravity cup is highly recommended. (3) Substrate Heating (Manual Spray Pyrolysis): To achieve flat, uniform crystalline films without muddy cracking or coffee-ring effects, the substrate (such as a stainless steel current collector or a ceramic pellet) is usually placed on a laboratory hot plate held at 60°C to 150°C during manual spraying. This forces the volatile carrier solvent (like ethanol, acetone, or water) to flash-evaporate upon impact, leaving a dry, uniform particle layer.
