In automated battery manufacturing, a Servo-Driven Pouch Forming Machine provides precise depth control when shaping aluminum laminated film (ALF) for lithium-ion or sodium-ion pouch cells. Unlike traditional pneumatic or purely hydraulic forming presses—which rely on rigid mechanical dead-stops or manually stacked shims to limit the stroke—a servo-driven system utilizes a closed-loop ball screw or toggle mechanism controlled by an AC servo motor. This architecture allows operators to input and adjust the exact drawing depth directly through the Human-Machine Interface (HMI) touchscreen.

The upper male die punch is coupled to a high-accuracy servo drive. This configuration transforms a high-force mechanical process into an explicitly programmable curve: (1) Micron-Level Linear Resolution: The servo motor tracks its position via an absolute encoder, achieving an automatic punching depth accuracy of ±0.1 mm with touchscreens often supporting parameter entry down to steps of 0.01 mm). (2) Programmable Velocity Profiling: Aluminum laminated film consists of multiple thin layers (typically a outer protective nylon layer, an aluminum core barrier, and an inner polypropylene sealing layer). If the film is punched too quickly, the aluminum core strains past its elastic limit and ruptures. A servo drive allows the machine to execute a multi-stage velocity profile—fast approach, slow controlled drawing/stretching phase, brief bottom dwell-time for stress relief, and rapid retraction.
