A Hot-Pressing Micro Short-Circuit Tester (often combined as a Hot-Press Hi-pot Tester) is a specialized machine used in lithium-ion and sodium-ion battery fabrication. It simultaneously applies controlled heat and mechanical pressure to dry electrode stacks/jelly rolls while running high-voltage electrical insulation tests before electrolyte injection.

Hot Pressing (Physical Forming & Laminating): (1) Thermal Bonding: Heated platens (typically 60°C–90°C) soften binders or ceramic/PVDF coatings on the separator. (2) Stack Consolidation: Applied pneumatic/hydraulic pressure (typically 0.2–1.0 MPa) compacts the dry cell stack, eliminates internal air pockets, and ensures uniform cell thickness. (3) Improved Wetting: Close-contact layers allow for faster, more uniform electrolyte penetration during subsequent filling.

Micro Short-Circuit Testing (Hi-pot / Insulation Resistance): (1) Electrical Stress under Load: While the cell is compressed, a DC test voltage (typically 100V–1000V) is applied across the positive and negative tabs (and between tabs and pouch/casing). (2) Defect Screening: The combined mechanical load and high electrical field cause latent defects—such as electrode burrs, metallic dust contamination, or torn/thinned separator regions—to bridge the gap, triggering measurable leakage current or dielectric breakdown.
