A cylindrical cell grooving machine is a precision tool used to create a uniform inward "bead" or shoulder near the open end of a battery steel case. This groove serves as the structural seat for the gasket and cap (header) and is essential for achieving a hermetic seal during the subsequent crimping process.
When selecting a machine for formats like 18650, 21700, or the larger 4680, look for these critical parameters: (1) Grooving Depth: Typically adjustable between 1.2 mm and 2.0 mm. For 4680 cells, look for reinforced systems that can handle the thicker steel walls. (2) Grooving Width: Standard is 1.1 mm to 1.5 mm, depending on the blade thickness. (3) Precision: High-end models offer accuracy within ±0.1 mm. (4) Blade Durability: Quality tungsten steel or alloy blades should last for >1,000,000 cycles. (5) Compatibility: Most R&D units come with an 18650 die but offer swappable molds for 21700, 26650, or 32650. Larger cells like the 4680 often require a dedicated "Vertical" structure to maintain stability during rotation.
