A Semi-Automatic Electrode Winder for Cylindrical Cells is a precision assembly machine used to wind the "jelly roll"—the layered stack of cathode, anode, and two separator sheets—into a compact cylinder.
A consistent winding is vital because gaps or uneven tension lead to non-uniform current distribution and internal stress during cycling. (1) Loading: The operator places two rolls of separator and the cathode/anode foils onto the unwinding shafts. (2) Feeding: The leading edges of the separators are fed into the winding needle (mandrel). (3) Electrode Insertion: As the mandrel begins to spin, the operator inserts the cathode (e.g., SPAN) and the anode (Li-metal or Graphite). (4) Controlled Winding: The machine rotates the mandrel at a programmed speed while maintaining constant tension on all four layers. (5) Finishing: Once the desired length or diameter is reached, the machine cuts the separators and applies a termination tape to hold the roll together.
