Add-Ons
Zinc phenolsulfonate (Zn(PS)2, zinc p-phenolsulfonate) is a specialized aromatic organosulfonate salt utilized as a high-performance functional additive or primary solute in advanced aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs).Featuring both divalent zinc centers and bulky, surface-active organic phenyl-sulfonate anions, Zn(PS)2 serves as an interphase-modifying agent engineered to regulate zinc electrodeposition kinetics and suppress parasitic side reactions.
The key electrochemical advantages of Zn(PS)2 are: (1) Anion Adsorption and Preferred 2D Horizontal Plating: The large aromatic rings of the phenolsulfonate (PS-) anions possess high surface energy and adsorb strongly onto the basal planes of the zinc anode via π-π interactions and electrostatic attraction. This forms a temporary or semi-permanent organic-rich shielding layer that blocks active high-energy sites (such as kinks and edges), forcing uniform 2D layer-by-layer zinc growth and preventing dendrite initiation. (2) Suppression of Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER): By forming a hydrophobic, densely packed adsorption layer at the inner Helmholtz layer, the bulky organic anions displace free water molecules from the immediate vicinity of the zinc electrode surface, drastically minimizing water activity and cutting down parasitic hydrogen evolution. (3) In-Situ Composite SEI Generation: Similar to triflates, perchlorate systems are far less prone to precipitating insulating basic zinc sulfate by-products (Zn4SO4(OH)6 · xH2O) during localized pH spikes at the cathode-electrolyte interface. During initial electrochemical cycling, the sulfonate and phenolic groups can undergo controlled reductive decomposition or coordination, contributing to a robust, hybrid inorganic-organic Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) rich in zinc sulfonate and carbonaceous fragments.
