ACMO (4-Acryloylmorpholine) (C7H11NO2) is a specialized, highly polar monofunctional acrylamide-type monomer featuring a stable heterocyclic morpholine ring attached to a reactive vinyl group. While traditional multifunctional acrylates drive 3D network gelation, ACMO is utilized in advanced energy storage research as a high-polarity co-monomer and functional additive for Gel Polymer Electrolytes (GPEs) and solid-state polymer electrolyte systems. It significantly enhances interfacial wetting, elevates thermal stability, and actively participates in lithium/sodium ion solvation.

Its main features are: (1) Polar Morpholine Ring Structure: Contains a tertiary nitrogen and ether-like oxygen within a saturated six-membered heterocyclic ring. This confers exceptional dipole moment and high polarity, boosting compatibility with aprotic carbonate solvents and polar salt solutions (LiPF6, LiTFSI, LiFSI). (2) Enhanced Ion Solvation & Conductivity: The oxygen and nitrogen heteroatoms within the morpholine ring act as Lewis base coordination sites, actively participating in Li+ or Na+ ion transport, reducing desolvation energy, and helping maintain high ionic conductivities (>10^{-3} S/cm). (3) Low Volatility & High Thermal Stability: Features a high boiling point and low vapor pressure, ensuring excellent thermal retention and safety under high-temperature operating conditions. (4) Low Toxicity & Good Interfacial Adhesion: Exhibits lower skin irritation and toxicity compared to traditional acrylic monomers, while providing superior adhesion to high-voltage oxide cathodes and lithium/sodium metal anodes.

Its main functional roles in GPEs synthesis are: (1) Interfacial Wetting & Cathode Passivation: Because of its high surface polarity, ACMO radically improves the wetting behavior of liquid electrolyte precursors on high-loading composite cathodes (such as NCM811 or high-voltage spinels) and separators, minimizing interfacial resistance and preventing dry-out. (2) Co-Polymerization Network Modification: When copolymerized alongside multi-functional structural crosslinkers (such as HDDA, HDDMA, DPGDA, or TPGDA) and ion-conducting oligomers (like PEGMA), ACMO introduces polar pendant groups that prevent crystalline phase separation and enhance amorphous domain mobility. (3) Robust Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) / Cathode Electrolyte Interphase (CEI) Formation: The electrochemical reduction/oxidation of the morpholine ring and tertiary amide structure contributes to the formation of a robust, inorganic-rich protective passivation layer on alkali metal anodes and high-nickel cathodes, suppressing parasitic side reactions during fast-charging protocols.
