Dipropylene Glycol Diacrylate (DPGDA) (C10H16O5) is a low-viscosity, bifunctional aliphatic acrylate monomer featuring two reactive acrylate groups bridged by a flexible dipropylene glycol ether (-CH2CH(CH3)OCH(CH3)CH2-) core. In advanced energy storage research, DPGDA is widely utilized as a high-reactivity crosslinking agent and reactive diluent for Gel Polymer Electrolytes (GPEs) and in situ polymerized solid/gel battery systems, combining rapid curing kinetics with ether-oxygen linkages that actively assist in alkali metal ion coordination.

Its main features are: (1) Bifunctional Acrylate Architecture: Features two terminal acrylate (CH2=CHCOO-) groups (f = 2) that enable rapid, high-conversion crosslinking under thermal or UV initiation. (2) Ether-Linkage Core: Unlike hydrocarbon-bridged diacrylates (such as HDDA or HDDMA), DPGDA incorporates ether-oxygen atoms (-C-O-C-) within its central flexible spacer. This chemical similarity to polyethylene glycol (PEG) structures enhances local segment polarity and ion solvation. (3) Low Liquid Viscosity & Reactive Dilution: Possesses very low room-temperature viscosity, serving as an exceptional reactive diluent that dissolves readily in aprotic carbonate electrolyte solvents and thoroughly penetrates porous separator membranes (glass fiber, PE/PP) and dense electrode microstructures prior to gelation. (4) Balanced Flexibility & Mechanical Strength: The short oxyaliphatic backbone provides a favorable balance between network elasticity and rigidity, preventing excessive brittleness while maintaining dimensional stability during cycling.

Its main functional roles in GPEs synthesis are: (1) Rapid 3D Network Formation & Electrolyte Immobilization: Upon thermal (using AIBN or BPO) or UV-initiated free-radical polymerization (using photoinitiators like TPO-L or BAPO), DPGDA rapidly copolymerizes into a stable 3D polymer mesh that permanently traps and immobilizes liquid organic electrolytes, eliminating free-flowing liquid leakage risks. (2) Enhanced Ionic Conduction via Ether Oxygen Coordination: The ether linkages within the dipropylene glycol backbone participate in Lewis acid-base interactions with lithium or sodium ions (Li+/Na+), facilitating ion hopping and segmental motion. This ensures that the crosslinked gel matrix maintains high room-temperature ionic conductivities, frequently exceeding 10^{-3}  S/cm. (3) Interfacial Wetting & Adhesion: The low-viscosity liquid precursor thoroughly wets separator fibers and active material particle surfaces, establishing intimate interfacial contact that reduces interfacial charge-transfer resistance upon in situ gelation.
