TEGDMA (Triethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (C14H22O6) is a bifunctional aliphatic methacrylate monomer featuring two reactive methacrylate groups bridged by a flexible, short oligo(ethylene glycol) ether spacer (-(CH2CH2O)3-). In advanced energy storage research, TEGDMA is utilized as an exceptional crosslinking agent for Gel Polymer Electrolytes (GPEs) and in situ polymerized solid/gel battery systems, providing a favorable balance between mechanical network stability and enhanced alkali metal ion solvation.

Its main features are: (1) Bifunctional Methacrylate Architecture: Features two terminal methacrylate (CH2=C(CH3)COO-) groups (f = 2) that undergo controlled free-radical polymerization to form a stable 3D polymer network. (2) PEO-Like Oligo-Ether Backbone: Unlike purely aliphatic hydrocarbon spacers (such as HDDA or HDDMA), TEGDMA contains recurring ether-oxygen atoms (-C-O-C-) that structurally mimic polyethylene oxide (PEO). This local chemical environment actively assists in ion coordination and salt dissociation. (3) Low Liquid Viscosity & Miscibility: Possesses moderate room-temperature viscosity and dissolves readily in aprotic carbonate binary/ternary solvent blends (EC/DEC/DMC/PC) and liquid monomer mixtures, ensuring thorough infiltration of porous separator membranes and electrode pores prior to curing. (4) Optimized Chain Flexibility: The flexible triethylene glycol chain provides higher conformational mobility than shorter dimethacrylates (like EGDMA), lowering the glass transition temperature (Tg) and preventing excessive network brittleness during cycling.

Its main features are: (1) Rigid 3D Network & Complete Liquid Immobilization: DPHA rapidly copolymerizes into a tight, highly branched mesh that permanently traps and immobilizes organic liquid electrolytes (EC/DEC/DMC/PC), completely eliminating free-flowing liquid leakage and suppressing solvent volatility. (2) Superior Mechanical Dendrite Suppression: Because soft, flexible linear polymer matrices can sometimes lack the high shear modulus required to physically block aggressive lithium or sodium dendrite growth, incorporating DPHA as a high-density crosslinker substantially elevates the mechanical hardness and puncture resistance of the GPE. (3) Enhanced Dimensional Stability Under Cycling: The rigid 3D architecture restrains volumetric expansion and contraction at the electrode interfaces during prolonged cycling, preventing micro-cracking and maintaining continuous interfacial contact.

The main functional roles in GPEs are: (1) Permanent 3D Network & Liquid Immobilization: Upon thermal (using AIBN or BPO) or UV-initiated free-radical polymerization (using photoinitiators like TPO-L or BAPO), TEGDMA copolymerizes into a stable 3D mesh that permanently traps and immobilizes organic liquid electrolytes, eliminating free-flowing liquid leakage risks. (2) Enhanced Ionic Conduction via Ether-Oxygen Solvation: The ether linkages within the triethylene glycol spacer participate in Lewis acid-base interactions with lithium or sodium ions (Li+/Na+), facilitating ion hopping, reducing desolvation energy, and ensuring high room-temperature ionic conductivities routinely exceeding 10^{-3} S/cm. (3) Interfacial Wetting & Dimensional Stability: The low-viscosity liquid precursor thoroughly wets separator fibers and composite electrode microstructures, while the crosslinked ether-rich network maintains structural integrity and restrains volumetric fluctuations during prolonged charge-discharge cycling.
