THFA (Tetrahydrofurfuryl Acrylate, >99.0%) (C8H12O3) is a specialized monofunctional acrylate monomer featuring a five-membered saturated cyclic ether (tetrahydrofuran ring) attached via a flexible methylene linkage to a reactive acrylate group. While multi-functional crosslinkers provide primary 3D network connectivity, THFA is utilized in advanced energy storage research as a high-polarity functional co-monomer and reactive diluent for Gel Polymer Electrolytes (GPEs) and solid-state polymer electrolyte systems. It combines low liquid viscosity with cyclic ether oxygen sites that actively assist in alkali metal ion solvation.

Its main features are: (1)Tetrahydrofurfuryl Ring Architecture: Features a cyclic ether moiety that provides localized oxygen lone pairs, creating a favorable local environment for Lewis acid-base interactions with lithium (Li+) or sodium (Na+) ions. (2) Low Liquid Viscosity & Reactive Dilution: Possesses very low room-temperature viscosity, enabling it to function as an efficient reactive diluent that dissolves readily in aprotic carbonate binary/ternary solvent blends (EC/DEC/DMC/PC) and thoroughly wets porous separator membranes (glass fiber, PE/PP, or Celgard) and dense electrode pores prior to curing. (3) Rapid Acrylate Polymerization Kinetics: As an acrylate derivative, THFA exhibits fast free-radical propagation rates under thermal or UV activation, ensuring efficient copolymerization into the growing polymer network.High Polar Miscibility: The polar cyclic ether structure prevents phase separation during in situ gelation, maintaining homogeneous distribution throughout the polymer-solvent-salt matrix.

Its main features are: (1) Rigid 3D Network & Complete Liquid Immobilization: DPHA rapidly copolymerizes into a tight, highly branched mesh that permanently traps and immobilizes organic liquid electrolytes (EC/DEC/DMC/PC), completely eliminating free-flowing liquid leakage and suppressing solvent volatility. (2) Superior Mechanical Dendrite Suppression: Because soft, flexible linear polymer matrices can sometimes lack the high shear modulus required to physically block aggressive lithium or sodium dendrite growth, incorporating DPHA as a high-density crosslinker substantially elevates the mechanical hardness and puncture resistance of the GPE. (3) Enhanced Dimensional Stability Under Cycling: The rigid 3D architecture restrains volumetric expansion and contraction at the electrode interfaces during prolonged cycling, preventing micro-cracking and maintaining continuous interfacial contact.

The main functional roles in GPEs are: (1) Enhanced Ionic Conduction via Ether-Oxygen Solvation: The oxygen atom within the tetrahydrofurfuryl ring acts as an electron-donating coordination site that interacts dynamically with charge-carrying cations. This assists in salt dissociation, lowers desolvation energy, and promotes segmental chain motion, ensuring that THFA-modified GPE networks maintain high room-temperature ionic conductivities routinely exceeding 10^{-3} S/cm. (2) Superior Interfacial Wetting & Adhesion: Due to its high surface polarity and low surface tension, THFA radically improves the wetting behavior of liquid electrolyte precursors on high-loading composite cathodes (such as NCM811) and alkali metal anodes, minimizing interfacial resistance and eliminating dry-out. (3) Copolymerization Network Modification & Flexibility: Because THFA is monofunctional (f = 1), it cannot form a 3D network on its own. When copolymerized alongside multi-functional structural crosslinkers (such as HDDA, DPGDA, THEICTA, or DPHA) and ion-conducting macromers (like PEGMA or host polymers such as PVDF-HFP), it introduces pendant cyclic groups that disrupt crystallinity, lower the glass transition temperature (Tg), and enhance amorphous domain mobility.
