Tripropylene glycol diacrylate (TPGDA) is a bifunctional aliphatic acrylate monomer (C15H24O6) featuring two reactive acrylate (CH2=CHCOO-) groups bridged by a flexible, ether-oxygen-containing tripropylene glycol soft segment. In advanced energy storage research, TPGDA is widely utilized as a standard flexible crosslinking agent for Gel Polymer Electrolytes (GPEs) and in situ polymerized solid/gel battery systems, providing an excellent balance of rapid curing kinetics, mechanical elasticity, and high ionic mobility for high-energy lithium and sodium metal batteries.

The main functional roles of the TPGDA in GPEs are: (1) Flexible 3D Network & Liquid Immobilization: Upon thermal or UV-initiated radical polymerization (using initiators like AIBN, BPO, or photoinitiators), TPGDA copolymerizes into a flexible 3D network that permanently traps and immobilizes organic liquid electrolytes. This eliminates free-flowing liquid leakage, converting high-energy liquid cells into safe, dimensionally stable gel systems. (2) High Ionic Conductivity via Segmental Mobility: The flexible tripropylene glycol soft segment ensures that the crosslinked polymer matrix does not overly restrict chain dynamics, allowing room-temperature ionic conductivities to routinely exceed 10^{-3} S/cm. (3) Stress Accommodation During Electrode Volume Fluctuations: The elastomeric nature of TPGDA-based networks allows the polymer matrix to absorb mechanical stresses and dynamically accommodate large volume fluctuations—such as those encountered in silicon anodes or high-capacity lithium/sodium metal plating—without interfacial delamination or cracking.
