Photoinitiator 2959—chemically known as 2-Hydroxy-4'-(2-hydroxyethoxy)-2-methylpropiophenone (C12H16O4), and widely recognized under commercial designations such as Irgacure 2959—is a highly efficient, water-compatible Type I hydroxyketone photoinitiator. In advanced energy storage research, Photoinitiator 2959 is utilized for the rapid UV-curing of aqueous and polar Gel Polymer Electrolytes (GPEs), hydrogel electrolytes, and eco-friendly polymer matrix systems (such as those deployed in aqueous zinc-ion, sodium-ion, and lithium-ion batteries).

Its main features are: (1) Type I alpha-Cleavage Mechanism: Upon absorption of ultraviolet radiation (primarily within the 250-320 nm range), Photoinitiator 2959 undergoes rapid unimolecular alpha-cleavage adjacent to the carbonyl group, generating active benzoyl and hydroxyalkyl radicals that initiate efficient vinyl chain polymerization. (2) Enhanced Aqueous & Polar Compatibility: Unlike standard hydrophobic photoinitiators (such as HCPK / Irgacure 184) that exhibit poor solubility in water, the secondary aliphatic hydroxyl group on the ethoxy substituent grants Photoinitiator 2959 significant water solubility (up to ~1–2 wt% in pure water at room temperature) and excellent miscibility in polar organic co-solvents. (3) Exceptional Biocompatibility & Low Cytotoxicity: Widely utilized in biomedical hydrogels and tissue engineering due to its low toxicity profile, ensuring that photolytic cleavage fragments do not generate aggressive acidic species or trigger parasitic redox side reactions. (4) Non-Yellowing Photostability: Exhibits high resistance to discoloration upon UV exposure, maintaining the optical and chemical integrity of the crosslinked electrolyte matrix.

Its main functional roles in GPEs synthesis are: (1) Rapid In Situ UV-Gelation of Aqueous & Hydrogel Systems: Photoinitiator 2959 enables the fast, room-temperature solidification of water-borne and hydrogel precursor solutions (such as polyvinyl alcohol [PVA], polyacrylamide [PAM], sodium alginate, or gelatin-methacryloyl [GelMA] matrices plasticized with concentrated aqueous salts like Zn(OTf)2, ZnSO4, or LiTFSI) directly inside sealed cells. (2) Elimination of Volatile Organic Solvents: By accommodating water-rich and solvent-free polar formulations, Photoinitiator 2959 facilitates green, aqueous battery manufacturing workflows, avoiding hazardous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) while preserving high ionic conductivity (>10^{-3} S/cm). (3) Uniform 3D Network Crosslinking: Because it dissolves homogeneously into aqueous and polar electrolyte phases without phase separation, free radicals are generated uniformly across separator pores and electrode microstructures, establishing a robust, dimensionally stable polymer mesh.
