In pouch cell fabrication, a pneumatic pouch forming machine is used to punch the "cup" or "pit" into Aluminum Laminated Film (ALF). This cup holds the electrode stack and electrolyte. Pneumatic models are the standard for laboratory R&D because they are cleaner, more compact, and require less maintenance than hydraulic systems, making them ideal for use inside a dry room or glovebox.

The distinct features of the pneumatic pouch forming machine: (1) Adjustable Pressure: The pressure can be fine-tuned so it is high enough to form the cup but not so high that it shears the aluminum layer. (2) Punching Speed: Pneumatic cylinders provide a fast, consistent stroke that often yields cleaner corners than slow manual lever punches. (3) Die Quality: High-end suppliers use R-angle (rounded) corners on the punch to distribute stress during the drawing process.

Punching Depth

  • The punching depth can be adjustable by replacing blocking dies with various height. 
  • There are standard blocking dies for making pouch cell case with depth of 3 mm, 4 mm, 5 mm, and 6 mm.

Gas Compressor
  • A gas compressor (EUQOFGC) or a gas tank is required to provide 80-110 psi to support the pneumatic operation. 
  • For 5mm and 6mm punching depth, at least 95 psi is required.
